Your thrillers are known for their gripping suspense and well-developed characters. What inspires your storytelling, and how do you keep readers on the edge of their seats?
Thank you! I’ve always loved fast-paced stories with high stakes and characters who feel real—people who have strengths but also struggles they have to overcome. My inspiration often comes from real-life events, news stories, and even ‘what if’ scenarios that pop into my head.
To keep readers on the edge of their seats, I focus on creating strong conflicts and relentless tension. Every scene has to serve a purpose—whether it’s deepening character relationships, raising stakes, or throwing in an unexpected twist. I love keeping the suspense tight. At the heart of it all, I want my readers to feel deeply connected to the characters and invested in their journey to justice, hope, and healing.
Faith often plays a significant role in your novels. How do you balance incorporating spiritual themes while maintaining fast-paced, high-stakes suspense?
Faith is a natural part of my storytelling because it’s a core part of who I am. My goal is to weave spiritual themes organically into the plot and characters’ journeys, rather than forcing them in. I focus on making faith a natural extension of the characters’ struggles—whether it’s a crisis of trust, wrestling with forgiveness, or finding courage in the face of danger.
Balancing this with fast-paced suspense comes down to seamless integration. The action never stops, but the characters’ internal battles—emotional, mental, and spiritual—unfold alongside the external threats they’re facing. I make sure that moments of faith don’t slow the pace but instead add depth, making the stakes feel even higher. My hope is that readers walk away entertained but also encouraged, knowing that even in the darkest moments, God is with them.
With numerous bestselling series to your name, how has your writing evolved over the years? Are there any key lessons you’ve learned along the way?
My writing has definitely evolved over the years, both in terms of craft and confidence. When I first started, I was focused on getting the basics right—plot structure, pacing, character development, etc. I’ve always been an instinctual writer, going with my gut on a lot of stuff like how the story should play out, and over time, I’ve not only learned the craft, but also to trust my instincts even more, take creative risks, and dive deeper into character emotions and motivations.
One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned is that readers connect with authenticity. Suspense and action are important, but if readers don’t care about the characters, the tension won’t matter. So I’ve worked hard to make my characters feel flawed, resilient, and relatable.
Another key lesson is the importance of perseverance. Writing is a journey, and every book teaches me something new. I’ve learned to embrace the editing process, listen to feedback, and always strive to improve.
Your background includes teaching and working in the deaf community. How have these experiences shaped your approach to storytelling and character development?
My experiences in teaching and working in the deaf community have given me a deeper understanding of people—how they communicate, overcome challenges, and find strength in adversity. Those experiences have absolutely influenced my approach to storytelling and character development.
Teaching helped me understand different learning styles, personalities, and how people process information, which translates into creating diverse and layered characters. Working in the deaf community, and being hard of hearing myself, just strengthened my knowledge of the power of nonverbal communication, perseverance, and the unique challenges faced by those with hearing loss. It also reinforced to me that every individual has a story, and that representation matters.
Because of these experiences, I’m intentional about crafting characters who feel real—people with strengths, struggles, and resilience. I want to portray their journeys authentically and with depth. Most importantly, I aim to tell stories that reflect hope, courage, and the power of overcoming obstacles.
Many of your books have strong, determined heroines. What draws you to writing such characters, and do you have a favourite protagonist from your novels?
I’ve always been drawn to strong, determined heroines because I love writing about women who face challenges head-on and refuse to back down, no matter the danger. I think strength comes in many forms—not just physical toughness but also emotional resilience, intelligence, and unwavering faith. I want my heroines to feel real, with flaws and struggles, but also with the courage to fight for justice, protect those they love, and grow through adversity.
As for a favorite protagonist, that’s a tough one! I’ve written so many heroines who hold a special place in my heart, but if I had to choose, one of my favorites would be Emily Chastain from Code of Valor. She’s a survivor and she definitely has her issues stemming from her relationship with her mother, but she’s also compassionate and determined to do what’s right, even when it puts her in danger. I love watching my characters grow, and each heroine teaches me something new as I write her story. Ultimately, I hope my readers see a little bit of themselves in my heroines—women who may not have all the answers but who face life’s challenges with faith, courage, and determination.
