Heidi McLaughlin masterfully weaves heartfelt stories filled with love, redemption, and relatable characters, captivating readers with her emotional depth and authenticity.
Your bestselling Beaumont Series has captivated readers with its emotional depth and relatable characters. What inspired you to create the world of 4225 West, and how do you keep the series fresh for longtime fans?
I wish I could say I had a dream and woke up to write, but the truth is, I saw a photo on social media, and it sparked the idea of Liam. I sent the image to my best friend, and she asked some questions. That night, I wrote the first two or three chapters, and everything fell into place. The series has grown and expanded, and I put the characters in real-life situations. They have flaws, experience personal growth, and go through things everyone else does.
Your novels often explore love, second chances, and personal growth. What themes or messages do you hope resonate most with your readers? People (mostly) deserve a second chance, and some decisions can be forgiven.
As an author with a strong presence in both romance and sports fiction, how do you balance the heartwarming, emotional aspects of your stories with the dynamic world of professional sports?
I live in a heavy sports area. We have five professional teams and over ten Division I schools, all within an hour from me—athletes are normal. We see them daily out and about. When I created my baseball, football, and college hockey teams, I wanted the characters to be your neighbor who has to mow his lawn before he drives to the stadium for his game. There isn’t anything flashy about my athletes, which makes them relatable and easy to fall in love with.
You’ve successfully adapted your novel, Forever My Girl, into a film. What was it like seeing your work come to life on screen, and how involved were you in the adaptation process?
When I was on set, watching the first scene of the day being filmed, it was surreal. Alex and Tyler (Liam & Jake) sat with me and watched. They asked questions about the writing and the characters they were playing. While I would’ve loved to be part of the adaptation process, I had sold my rights to the book months after publishing and didn’t know a whole lot about the ins and outs. My role was minimal. I’m in the movie, though!
With a vast catalogue of books spanning different subgenres, how do you approach writing across multiple series while maintaining a unique voice and emotional depth in each story?
I take a lot of notes! Most of my books have emotional value, whether it’s a breakup, illness, or someone dying, so my novels tend to give you that element. Overall, it’s notes about each character arc and how they grow through each chapter.
