How do you approach character development to make your female protagonists relatable and empowering?
When I create my female protagonist, I think about women I know and characteristics they have that I admire. I think about someone I would want to have as a friend. I want her to be strong, independent, bold, maybe a bit stubborn, and confident in who she is. She needs to be a good listener, a good friend, empathetic and unafraid to speak her mind. How does it feel to have your books reach a global audience, and what impact has this had on your writing journey?
I was shocked and delighted when I realized that my books were being read all around the world. I love interacting with readers on Facebook and Instagram or through emails. I have a private Facebook group with members from Australia, India, Spain, England and many other countries. It’s great knowing that we all have something in common and that is a love of time travel romances. I have had all of my books translated into Spanish and my Delight series has been translated into German. I hope to continue writing stories that are enjoyed by readers everywhere.
How do you see the future of self-publishing evolving, and what role do you envision for authors in this landscape?
Self-publishing has certainly evolved over the years I’ve been writing. I’ve enjoyed having the control to set my own schedule and write the stories I think will be interesting to readers. Recently there has been a lot of controversy about books being written with AI. I’m not sure how that will turn out and what it will do to the independent author, but I’m hoping that readers will continue to choose well written and engaging stories that touch them and have meaning to their lives. No matter what, authors will continue to write and publish their books with the hope that readers will continue to take a chance on their work.
What advice would you offer to aspiring authors looking to carve their niche in the romance or time-travel genres?
My advice would be to put aside any doubts you may have and jump in. Write because you love to write. Write about something you love. Write the book that you would want to read. It’s also important to be as professional as possible. As an Indie author that means you are the boss of your book business. You’ll need a good editor, proof reader and cover artist. You’ll also need a website and to engage with readers on social media. A newsletter is a very important way to communicate with readers who want to hear from you.
