Symbolism and Abstraction: A Fluid Language
When asked about balancing symbolic meaning and abstract patterns, Pieri explains, “Every artist, over time, develops a language. What I aspire to do is have and use a language that I don’t think about, like using English. I don’t think about talking or formulating a sentence, but there are times when I search for a specific word—a more complex, descriptive word. This is how it is making art.” For her, symbolism and abstraction flow naturally, each enhancing the other to convey deeper narratives.
The Power of Authentic Materials
Authenticity is central to Pieri’s practice. “It is of utmost importance to me, as a human being, that I am authentic—in my relationships, my word, my actions, my art. Art never lies; it only reveals,” she says. Her choice of materials, like 23-carat gold leaf and handmade papers, is intentional. “They help imbue my art with beauty, cultural integrity, sincerity, courage, and strength.” These elements elevate her work, ensuring each piece carries a sense of timelessness and truth.
Influence of Indian Miniatures and Folk Art
Pieri’s fascination with Indian miniatures began over 30 years ago. “They originally captured me because of their delicacy, their different cultural expression, their color, design, and storytelling,” she recalls. A trip to Northern India in 2012 introduced her to folk art, which she describes as a liberation. “I discovered Indian Folk Art, which freed me into realms of joy, dance, uncalculated vibrancy, and new visual experiences.” Today, her work harmonizes the precision of miniatures with the exuberance of folk traditions.
Passion and Perseverance
A quote in her studio speaks to burning passion and perseverance—qualities that have sustained her through challenges. “I always knew I wanted to be an artist, from the age of 6 when my crayon drawing was chosen to hang in the principal’s office,” she shares. Yet the path hasn’t always been easy. “I have cried bitter tears and packed up my studio a couple of times over my long art life.” Her advice to aspiring artists is candid: “Being an artist is a hard life, but it is a great life. If you can’t take rejection, get out now.”
Emotion and Invention
Emotional expression is woven into Pieri’s patterns and symbols. “Invention and beauty are what I am after,” she says. At this stage in her career, she no longer separates thinking from doing. “I kick everyone out of the studio, including myself, to paraphrase John Cage. Only then do I wander in the space that most understands me, in search of beauty and invention.”
The Fear of Repetition and the Thrill of Discovery
After decades of creation, Pieri remains driven by evolution. “I live in fear of repeating myself!” she admits. Between series, she embarks on “scrounging missions”—periods of exploration and uncertainty—until something unexpected sparks her imagination. “It takes patience and fortitude until something breaks through.”
Diane Pieri’s art is a celebration of cultural storytelling, emotional depth, and unyielding innovation. Her journey reminds us that true artistry lies in the courage to explore, the resilience to endure, and the unwavering commitment to beauty.
