We sat down with JoAnn to learn more about her creative journey and the impact her work has had on families around the world.
From Dream to Reality
JoAnn’s journey as an author began with a moment of simple inspiration. “It all started with my grandson’s first camping trip,” she shares. “Witnessing his excitement and wonder as he explored nature motivated me to write John’s Camping Adventures. It began as a simple story to capture that experience but grew into a passion I hadn’t anticipated.”
This pivotal moment not only launched JoAnn’s first book but also set the course for a career in self-publishing. “I chose self-publishing to retain creative freedom and bring my stories to life on my timeline,” she explains. Alongside a trusted team of editors, illustrators, and designers, JoAnn has built a body of work deeply rooted in creativity and intentionality. “Over time, my storytelling has become more purposeful, tackling themes like kindness, adventure, and STEM learning in ways that resonate with children.”
The Inspiration Behind the Stories
JoAnn’s most recent book, Rory’s Quest: A Lou’s Zoo Adventure, is the third installment in her popular Lou’s Zoo Series. “This book follows the heartfelt journey of Rory, a young rhino searching for his lost mother,” she shares. “Rory faces challenges, relies on friends, and discovers the strength within himself. His story is about perseverance, hope, and the importance of meaningful connections.”
Through Rory’s journey, JoAnn aims to leave a lasting message with her readers. “I hope families take away the power of resilience and the value of leaning on others for support, especially when facing life’s unexpected challenges,” she says.
Navigating Creativity and Business
As both an author and entrepreneur, JoAnn has faced the delicate balance of creativity and business. “The biggest challenge is dividing my time between writing and managing the ongoing demands of marketing,” she explains. “While I love the creative process, I also need to promote my books, maintain a social media presence, attend book fairs, and connect with readers.”
Although demanding, JoAnn has embraced this part of her career. “I’ve learned to prioritize my schedule and rely on my team when needed. The process has made me more resourceful and adaptable, and it’s rewarding to see my stories reach children all over the world.”
Encouraging Positivity and Learning
A hallmark of JoAnn’s work is her focus on positivity, kindness, and enthusiasm for learning. “These are values I deeply believe in, and I incorporate them into my books naturally,” she says. “But beyond that, I’m passionate about making science and nature exciting for children. My Amelia Ophelia Series, for example, introduces kids to topics like bee conservation and ocean protection in fun, approachable ways.”
For JoAnn, storytelling is about more than entertainment. “I want children to feel empowered—to see how their curiosity and actions can make a difference. In today’s fast-paced, tech-centric world, stories that nurture empathy and education are more important than ever.”
Connecting with Readers
One of JoAnn’s greatest joys is hearing from young readers and their families. “I’ve had kids tell me they’ve been inspired to go camping like John or dream of building rockets like Rylee,” she shares with a smile. “It’s these moments of connection that remind me why I write.”
Feedback from her readers also influences her work. “I pay attention to the questions kids ask or the characters they relate to most. Their excitement often fuels my next idea. At the heart of it, my goal is to create stories that make every child feel seen, inspired, and encouraged to explore their potential.”
Through her dedication to storytelling and education, JoAnn M. Dickinson continues to inspire curiosity, resilience, and joy in the hearts of her readers—one book at a time.
