Karen’s connection to the BDSM lifestyle is evident in the authenticity of her writing. She draws from her own experiences to craft scenes that are both realistic and relatable. “Most of the BDSM scenes in my books are based on personal experiences. I’ve experienced subspace, tried many impact toys (I really, really don’t like canes), and have a deep understanding of the freedom of being bound,” Karen shared. For her, writing these scenes is about ensuring they are safe, sane, and consensual, even when the relationships in the stories evolve in unexpected ways.

Karen’s path to becoming a bestselling author wasn’t straightforward. After parting ways with an untrustworthy publisher, she decided to chart her own course. “I wanted to try something completely different. This became an interconnected family saga about a small town with a dark secret beneath the surface.” The Savage Billionaires series marked a shift in her writing, particularly after her co-author friend Ellen decided to step away from writing. This left Karen to continue with her writing career and bring new life to the series.

Writing erotic romance with a BDSM focus comes with its unique challenges, especially when the genre is often misunderstood. “Because of the BDSM element, my books are often mistaken for erotica,” Karen explained. “I have nothing against erotica, but my books are mainly relationship-driven, with BDSM and sex playing a part in deepening those relationships.” The reward, for Karen, is the ability to showcase the depth and trust that is inherent in BDSM dynamics, making the stories both passionate and meaningful.

Karen’s writing is a delicate dance of sensuality and suspense. “The backbone of my story is the relationship,” she said. “The sensual parts help to move that connection along, while the suspense elements keep things intriguing.” Her love for suspense can be traced back to childhood, where she devoured the works of Colin Forbes, Alistair MacLean, and Desmond Bagley. When it comes to writing, Karen describes herself as a mix of a plotter and a pantser. “I always start with a solid outline, but about halfway through, my characters take over,” she laughs. “They never listen!” Despite this, she’s learned to embrace the chaos, often skipping ahead to the epilogue to map out the ending, ensuring her characters’ journey remains true to their happily-ever-after.
