Legal thrillers require a deep understanding of both the legal system and high-stakes drama. How do you balance accuracy with the need to keep readers on the edge of their seats?
It’s a fine balance. It’s important to me to be as accurate as possible, because that’s how I roll. Also, because I strive for accuracy, it gives me special access to subject matter experts who trust that I will try to accurately represent their professions. This research gives me the basis of the cases and characters in each novel.
But being accurate doesn’t mean the pace has to be slow. It means that the cases are rooted in reality, and the characters are authentic. Although the wheels of justice do indeed turn slowly, it’s the crime that drives the pace. I make the timeline very short—usually about two weeks—in each of my books. The motivations and evidence are revealed through different characters’ points of view, propelling the story forward. The result is a fast-paced, page-turning read in which I relentlessly ramp up the pace to a thrilling climax at the end.
Your books have been compared to *bestsellers in the thriller genre. What do you think sets your storytelling apart, and what elements do you believe make a thriller truly unforgettable?
*Note to editor: could you change “bestsellers” to “NYT bestselling authors” or “notable bestselling authors” as my books actually have been bestsellers, as well. Thank you!
Quite simply, I think the appeal of my books is that they combine intellect with heart. I am a student of life. I share my characters’ deepest secrets with my readers: their vulnerabilities and fears, their mistakes and hubris, their strengths and flaws. And then I immerse these characters—and the readers—in a complex world where a crime has rent the fabric of their lives.
Truly unforgettable thrillers possess page-turning suspense. Suspense is created by caring about the characters. I think we all see ourselves in some facet of them. But there’s also the converse—the question of Nietzsche’s monster in the abyss. When we look into the abyss, do we see ourselves? Unforgettable thrillers make us think about the moral grey areas that we confront every day in our lives, the choices that are made, and the ripple effect they have on society.
Writing crime fiction often means diving into dark and intense themes. What is your approach to research, and how do you ensure authenticity without getting overwhelmed by the weight of the subject matter?
I conduct extensive research by reading cases, memoirs, technical documents. I then interview subject matter experts, including police detectives, forensic pathologists, forensic anthropologists, forensic identification experts, psychologists, etc. It’s one of the fun aspects of my job!
But even though my novels are crime thrillers, I don’t believe in sensationalizing violence. There is a raison d’être for every character (including a serial killer), and for every action in every book. I try to counteract intense themes by showing the personal lives of my characters—they are messy and human, just like us. Kate has a rescue husky who likes to leave a (toilet) paper trail.
Also, I think of myself as an “accidental thriller writer,” as I’m quite optimistic by nature. So even though the themes can be weighty, at the end of the day, my books are hopeful.
Your novels have captivated a wide audience. What has been the most rewarding moment of your writing career so far, and what can readers expect from you next?
It was pretty amazing when my debut novel Damaged was selected as a Levy Home Entertainment “Need to Read” Pick, and hit the Nielsen Bookscan bestseller list on its release. Since then, I’ve sold over 350,000 print copies and reached over one million readers, hitting numerous e-book bestseller lists. But the most rewarding part of my work is that so many people around the world relate to the characters I create and the stories I tell.
In terms of what’s next, I’ve been working on the development of the Kate Lange Thriller Series with a TV producer. I’m also trying to get the fifth Kate Lange book written, as I’m excited to share this story!
