Your novels explore the intense emotional landscapes of dominance, submission, and deep connection. What draws you to these themes, and how do you ensure your stories resonate authentically with readers?

In romance novels, love is always a high-stakes situation, and I think adding power exchange into the mix drives those stakes higher. In my books, it sometimes sets them on fire! Great BDSM relationships are like a dance, and I find that dance, that push and pull, extremely exciting to put on the page.

Of course, it’s only exciting if it’s written well and makes sense, so I do a lot of research into the kinks and lifestyles I put in my stories. Not that I’ve done all the things in my books! But I’m knowledgeable about the BDSM lifestyle and what might make a Dominant or submissive character tick.

Many of your books balance raw sensuality with deep character development. How do you approach crafting characters that feel complex and compelling while still delivering the steamy romance your readers love?

I studied creative writing in college, so that helps a lot on the craft side. As for the steamy side, there was a learning curve trying to write sex scenes that resonated with readers. They can’t be too short, or merely descriptive, inserting slot A into tab B. Readers need all the senses: the sights, the sounds, the sensations. I also try to weave in multiple layers of connection and meaning to increase the hotness factor. It’s a lot to juggle, but I like taking risks and seeing how things turn out. Sometimes my characters or scenes don’t turn out the way I expected, but that surprise can be wonderful.

Your writing delves into the psychology of relationships, often challenging societal norms. Have any real-life experiences or personal influences shaped the way you write about power dynamics in romance?

I’ve been into BDSM and kinky stuff for as long as I can remember, so my experiences and preferences shape a lot of what I put on the page. On rare occasions, I’ll try my hand at writing something I’m not personally into, but for the most part, my writing builds on experiences or fantasies I’ve had, or stories that have been shared with me. Many of my characters are drawn from people I’ve known or admired in real life. Some of them I’ve told, some I haven’t. They’re just walking around, not realizing they inspired a character or scene in one of my books!

You’ve built a strong readership within the BDSM romance genre. How do you navigate the fine line between fiction and responsible representation when portraying such nuanced relationships?

As an “edgier” BDSM author, I do agonize over the responsibility thing. I include a little blurb in the front of each novel to remind readers that what they’re about to read is fantasy…a Do Not Try This At Home disclaimer, so to speak. The key is for readers to know the difference between fantasy and real life. In real life, consent is essential in any power exchange relationship. In my books, non-consensual things happen. Dubious consent happens. The truth is, many of us desire things in our fantasy lives we wouldn’t want, or accept, in real life. Some of my roughest, most objectionable books are the ones where people write to me and say, “this reawakened my sex drive” or “this recharged my relationship.” That doesn’t mean what’s depicted is the best practice in BDSM or life!

With an extensive backlist of novels, how has your writing evolved over the years? Are there any particular books or characters that hold a special place in your heart, and if so, why?

Over time, I’ve branched out into related genres to keep things fresh. I’ve written some historical-kink series and some shorter-length novellas in between the contemporary BDSM titles. Other than that, my style and substance have pretty much remained the same. I do cringe a little at my earliest books because they’re so raw, but I also love them for that reason. Every story I’ve written has some theme or scene that’s super meaningful to me.

As for a personal fave, I’d have to say my Cirque Masters series. It’s a 3-book series set in a Cirque du Soleil-type company, and the characters and themes came to me so easily and vividly that it was a pure joy to write. That series begins with Cirque de Minuit. I’m also quite proud of Torment Me, which won a BDSM writing award—the coveted Golden Flogger. If you’re into BDSM romance, I hope you’ll check them out.
