Your debut novel was published in 2011. Looking back, how has your writing process evolved over the years, and what lessons have you learned that have shaped your storytelling today?

I never used to do any sort of plotting. I just let the story go wherever it wanted to. Now I do a little plotting. It helps me get over the ‘sagging middle’ that always seems to happen whether you plot out the book or not.

With over 80 novels to your name, including historical westerns, contemporary romances, and sci-fi westerns, which genre has challenged you the most, and why?

I think the contemporary romances. There is still research involved with each book. In my latest book, THE TYCOON, I had to research oil platforms so that I could write just a little about them. I don’t want the books to sound like a dissertation of whatever I’m researching, in this case oil platforms. I just want them to sound authentic.

You often feature strong female protagonists in your novels. What inspired you to create these empowering characters, and how do you ensure they resonate with your readers?

My mother is the force behind the strong female characters. She was a single mother of four. My father died when I was five and she became both mother and father to my younger brother and me. My oldest brother joined the army about 4 months after dad’s passing and my second older brother joined a couple of years later. But my mother still had two young children to raise and she did a great job of it, if I do say so myself.

Your recent release, The Gold Mountain Bride, is set during the Klondike Gold Rush. What drew you to this historical period, and how did you bring its challenges and adventures to life in your narrative?

The readers of my newsletter chose this historical period. I did a lot of reading about the time and place of the gold rush. I found out that there were very few female prospectors that came with husbands and even fewer that came on their own. The Canadian government made sure that each prospector had enough supplies to last at least one year. If the prospector didn’t have that, then they were turned away. Then they either had to buy more supplies or prove they had the money to purchase them. The prospectors had to traverse a horrible pass in the mountains to get to the Klondike and Yukon rivers. They had to take all their supplies over this pass and sometimes it would take three trips to get everything there. The hardship the prospectors faced is something I tried to make the readers understand without making it sound like a history lesson.

In The Gold Mountain Bride, you explore themes of resilience and hope amidst adversity. How do you balance historical accuracy with the emotional depth required for a compelling romance?

It’s a difficult thing to do and I don’t have a process for doing it. It’s all a matter of what feels right as I’m writing the scene.

Having achieved USA Today Bestselling status and authored numerous series, which accomplishment in your career are you most proud of, and what impact do you hope your stories have on your readers?

I’m most proud of becoming a USA Today Bestselling author. It was one of my goals and I achieved it. I hope that my books can take my readers away for a short time to somewhere where the craziness of our world doesn’t touch them. That for a short time they can be at peace and just enjoy themselves.
