Diana Mercedes Howell’s storytelling brilliance captivates readers with compassion, nostalgia, and deeply relatable characters, creating timeless literature for all ages.

An Inspiring Journey

Howell’s debut novel is more than just a coming-of-age story; it’s a tale that taps into the universal experiences of childhood, including the bittersweet moments of growing up. Her protagonist, Rose O’Reilly, faces challenges of friendship, loss, and self-discovery, which are themes that resonate with readers across generations.

For Howell, writing started later in life, but it quickly became a passion. “It was time to stop ignoring the signs. It was a now-or-never decision. Jump off the cliff and see if you can fly,” she says. And fly she did. With Wishes Are Free, Howell created a magical world where the innocence of childhood blends seamlessly with the deeper complexities of life.

The Magic Behind Wishes Are Free

What inspired you to write Wishes Are Free, and how did the story come about?

Howell’s journey into writing began with short stories for a close friend. “In the beginning, my main character in Wishes Are Free was a five-year-old named Sally,” Howell recalls. “I read these stories aloud to my intellectually challenged BFF, April. She loved them, and I thought, ‘I may have something here.’” What started as simple short stories evolved into a full-fledged novel. Through a unique structure, Howell weaves together episodes of Rose’s life, creating a novel that is both episodic and deeply emotional.

How did your childhood experiences influence the themes in Wishes Are Free?

Growing up, Howell faced her own challenges, including a turbulent home life marked by her father’s alcoholism and her mother’s depression. These difficult experiences shaped the themes in Wishes Are Free. “The main theme of the book is misunderstandings,” Howell explains. “Rose’s kind acts somehow backfire, and she gets into trouble, as did I growing up.”

Despite these struggles, Howell also infused the novel with the joy and excitement of childhood, from slumber parties to trips to the beach. “All the fun stuff, middle school crushes, making new friends, and Saturday Kiddie Matinees are there, too,” she says.

Creating a Story for All Ages

How do you approach character development, especially for young protagonists like Rose?

Howell’s characters, including Rose and Grandpa, are deeply inspired by her own life. “Every character in Wishes Are Free is based on me or the people I encountered growing up,” she shares. The authenticity in her characters creates a connection with readers, making the book feel both personal and universal.

What do you believe makes a children’s story resonate with both young readers and adults?

For Howell, the key to a successful story is emotion. “Emotions are universal,” she explains. Wishes Are Free is filled with compassion and heartwarming moments, which are why both children and adults find it compelling. Readers of all ages connect with Rose’s journey and the wisdom shared by Grandpa.
