Your debut novel, The Deadliners, explores the concept of spirits influencing human fate. What inspired you to delve into such a unique narrative, and how did it shape your subsequent writing endeavors?
There was actually a competition in a magazine where you had to write a short story from the first three lines they gave you. I just used those lines and the rest followed. I liked reading paranormal books and so my story took more of a ghosty turn. That idea flowed into a trilogy!
Having authored over 40 books across various series, including The Hunted Witch Agency and The Witch’s Pack, how do you maintain creativity and freshness in your storytelling across different universes?
There’s something about adding magic to stories that help them flow. If I get stuck anywhere, I can get a character to create a spell or throw a magic bomb. I’ve always found that paranormal creatures can find themselves in some interesting scenarios, which gives me inspiration to tell their stories.
Your biggest selling series, The Witch’s Pack, came out in September 2022. Could you share the central themes of these books and what readers can expect from this series?
The Witch’s Pack is full of emotive themes as well as romance. Della is a witch who has a brother who suffers with mental health issues. The series follows Della after her brother mistakenly injures a werewolf. The series is set in Brighton and when Malone, the alpha of the werewolf pack, confronts them, he’s unaware of her brother’s issues and seeks revenge. Della protects her brother and gets scratched by Malone’s claws in the process. The rest of the series promises trials as Della turns into a hybrid witch – part wolf, part witch. It is forbidden for an alpha to create a werewolf, let alone a hybrid, so Malone can only do one thing… get rid of her. Except, once she turns, the mating bond is evoked. There’s forbidden love, wars of loyalty, found family and accepting who you are.
Growing up in Surrey, you mentioned that books provided an escape during challenging times. How has your personal journey influenced the themes and characters in your novels?
My own life could make a novel in itself. As a child to young parents and a parent with mental health issues, I had to grow up fast, protecting my own brother, just like The Witch’s Pack. My mother read to us when we were little and so when she got ill, I carried on reading to my brother so that we could escape the uncertainty that those times brought. All my characters have known trauma and what it feels like to be adrift, but I also show them that life is worth fighting for and family can be found, no matter what you’ve been through.
You’ve successfully self-published your works since 2014. What have been the most rewarding and challenging aspects of self-publishing, and what advice would you offer aspiring authors considering this path?
Self-publishing has given me the freedom to be the writer I always wanted to be. It’s a business, which can be challenging, especially when you have a creative brain. I’ve had ups and downs, when series have been successful, but then the next one hasn’t done so well. There’s no guarentees, like most businesses, and that can squash the creative spark sometimes. However, when someone buys a book or leaves a review, I’m truly grateful that they’ve taken the time to read my work. I strive to bring escape, comfort and entertainment, just like the authors who did me when I was young. I also hope to bring a message of hope and that’s the most rewarding of all. I’d advise any aspiring independent authors to be patient. Get to know your craft, work with editors and quality cover designers. Take your time to learn that marketing starts before you even write the book. Most of all, be yourself and add your voice to the creative world of independent authors, rather than try to imitate others.

Reflecting on your career, from your first manuscript to your latest publications, what moments stand out as significant milestones or turning points in your journey as an author?
The amount of people who supported me when I released my first book was humbling, but like a lot of people starting out in business, I made mistakes. I had to find a balance between writing what I wanted and what others would like to read. My Hunted Witch Agency series was the one that started to earn me money as an author. I then had another series, The Witch’s Pack, that became my best selling series. These moments gave me the boost to keep going, despite the lows in publishing. This Summer will also give me another milestone as I’ve been accepted to trade at For the Love of Fantasy in London. At a show where there’ll be fantasy characters from famous TV shows, it’ll be amazing to meet readers and sell my books, which is always my dream come true.
